Aerogel is a synthetic porous ultralight material derived from a gel, in which the liquid component of the gel has been replaced with gas. The result is a solid with extermely low density and low thermal conductivity.
Despite the name, aerogel is solid, rigid, and dry material that do not resemble a gel in their physical properities: the name comes from the fact that they are made from gels and the air content can reach 99.8%.
